Portland’s sole polystyrene foam (EPS) recycler, Green Century Recycling LLC, is urging residents to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics, particularly polystyrene foam. This initiative aligns with Oregon’s broader movement to phase out environmentally harmful materials, including a statewide ban on polystyrene foam food service containers set to take effect in 2025.

Green Century Recycling, a certified R2v3 and ISO processor, specializes in recycling EPS and accepts a range of materials, including cardboard, mixed paper, electronic waste, and specific types of plastics, using a source-separated recycling method. Their efforts help divert approximately 544.41 tons of recyclables from landfills annually.

While recycling efforts like theirs are crucial for managing existing waste, Green Century emphasizes the importance of reducing consumption of single-use plastics to mitigate environmental harm. Polystyrene foam, in particular, poses a significant challenge as it doesn’t biodegrade and often breaks into microplastics, endangering wildlife and ecosystems.

Green Century Recycling advocates for reusable and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics and continues to expand its capacity and outreach through education, community clean-up events, and partnerships with certified recycling processors. Their comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to reducing plastic pollution and promoting a sustainable future.
